WESTERN NEW YORK ONE OF 26 LOCATIONS NATIONALLY CHOSEN TO PREMIER NEW MORE THAN PINK WALKTM EVENT IN 2019

Susan G. Komen’s Reimagined Event Improves Connection to Lifesaving Work Locally & Nationally

Susan G. Komen Upstate New York, with headquarters in Buffalo, recently announced exciting changes to its annual fundraising event that will take place in June of this year.  Komen has been hard at work on the next evolution in the history of the Race for the Cure® series, and members of Western New York will be among the first in the country to see it!

The Buffalo-based event has been selected to be one of twenty-six locations across the country to launch the new Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK WalkTM, which along with a new name will include a fresh look and reimagined experience focused on energizing the community around the lifesaving work Komen’s supporters make possible.  This new approach is based on input from participants across the country, data from nine pilot events in the fall of 2018, and by Komen’s own observations from years as the leader in community engagement events supporting breast cancer research, care programs, community advocacy, and action.

“Much of what we have all come to love about the Race for the Cure will continue with our introduction of the MORE THAN PINK Walk,” said Colleen Nossavage, the longstanding volunteer event chair in the Western New York Community.  “These changes are intended to increase people’s connection to our work beyond breast cancer awareness.  Together, we are more than pink – we are truly a giving community of friends and neighbors who want to do more for research. As the daughter of a 25 year survivor I also know that we need to do more for our loved ones, more for those among us who are living with breast cancer – including metastatic breast cancer – and more to get us to cures.”

The biggest difference participants will see is that the MORE THAN PINK Walk will not have a timed running element, focusing instead on the vast majority of attendees who have historically walked the route. The event in Western New York will continue its longstanding traditions of recognizing survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer through the introduction of Hope Village, providing the opportunity for friends and family to honor and celebrate the lives of those who have lost their battle to the disease with the introduction of a special We Remember tent, and connecting members to the mission through the introduction of the four Komen Pillars of research, care, community and action.
