Disgusting is the only word that comes to mind when I think of Donald Trump’s shameless and constant begging of Americans to give him money during a time when they have lost jobs, closed business, had over 106,000 friends and family die from Covid-19 and watched their cities go up in flames after the murder of George Floyd beneath the knee of sick and sadistic Minneapolis police officer which was caught on video. While I have literally received close to 400 emails since April 2nd (which is when I started saving them) from Trump or his surrogates asking me to donate money, not a single message from the president had a word of comfort, wisdom or empathy about the turmoil in America. Not only has Trump not addressed the George Floyd crisis other than to fuel the flames with a tweet about shooting people, he has been in hiding, even turning out all the lights in the White House when protesters gathered. It was like turning the lights out on Halloween to make trick or treaters believe no one was home. In short, Trump is a coward. Maybe he can’t face protesters because he claims has bone spurs in his feet (false), which kept him from going to Vietnam.
In addition to begging for donations a great number of messages are trying to sell me Trump puzzles, Trump coloring books, Trump lapel pins, Trump doormats, Trump hats, Trump mugs, Trump beer glasses, Trump autographed photos, Trump pencils, Trump flags, Trump official gold card membership, Trump playing cards, Trump lawn signs, Trump straws, and Tump wall plaques. Beside the messages purportedly from Donald Trump himself, I have gotten messages from Donald Trump, Jr. Lara Trump, Eric Trump, Brad Pascale (his internet manager), and Newt Gingrich. They even tried to exploit Melania Trump’s birthday, asking me to donate and sign her birthday card.
The messages themselves are disgusting and designed to exacerbate the polarization of our country. Many also say ridiculous things like Trump himself noticed my name was missing from the donor list. That Trump and his team expect anyone to believe he personally noticed some single person failed to donate reveals the utter contempt Trump has for the intelligence of his followers. Here are some of the opening lines of the messages I’ve received:
